Adambakkam, a residential area in South Chennai, has developed through the years and is now well known as a great place to live. The community is known for its quiet streets, friendly neighbours, and convenient lifestyle. Residents of Adambakkam also have easy access to schools, hospitals, and shops, as well as to daily needs. While many families and professionals are happy living in a peaceful neighbourhood, many people prefer to remain in proximity to their job and city life. In this blog, we will discuss the various reasons why living in Adambakkam is important.

History of Adambakkam

Adambakkam had grown into a fully developed suburb. To cater to the needs of the growing community, new housing developments sprang up right next to already existing schools and retail shops; during this time, a lot of families saw the opportunity to live. In more recent years, Adambakkam has continued to grow and has become a popular place for people to live due to its proximity to the main city.

Adambakkam has a long history that began many centuries ago, and the name Adambakkam originated from the Tamil word "Adambu." This is a type of wild grass that used to grow in abundance in this particular region of India. Some historians believe that the naming of this area was influenced over time by the amount of this grass that was native to the area due to the open ground. In pre-urbanisation times, Adambakkam was surrounded by open fields, lakes, and small agricultural lands; thus, many of the first settlers in the area were farmers, and the area resembled a small, quiet village on the outskirts of the expanding city of Chennai.

The history of this region is also connected to significant monuments and sites located nearby, including St. Thomas Mount, which has religious and historical importance dating back almost two thousand years. As people began to settle in larger numbers around St. Thomas Mount, neighbouring regions such as Adambakkam began to be developed into residential communities.

Following the mid-20th century expansion of Chennai, Adambakkam was transformed from an agricultural community into a suburban neighbourhood as new direct roads and a growing number of employers were developed in areas such as Guindy Industrial Estate, which provided jobs for the new population in Adambakkam. Consequently, through the 1980s and into the 1990s, the suburb of Adambakkam became increasingly developed, with new homes, schools, and retail establishments to satisfy the demands of the growing population. In more recent years, the suburb of Adambakkam has experienced additional population growth due to its close proximity to Chennai, as well as the ease of commuting to other parts of Chennai.

Connectivity

Adambakkam provides residents with excellent transportation links which operate at all times. The city offers easy travel options because its transportation system has been designed with efficiency in mind.

Roadways: Adambakkam contains a road system that connects every section of the neighbourhood. The two bus terminals, which serve NGO Colony and Puzhuthivakkam Bus Stand, enable residents to access all bus routes that operate throughout Chennai.

Metro: The St. Thomas Mount Metro Station and Nanganallur Road Metro Station serve as nearby stations for commuters who want to travel more quickly. The Chennai Metro network operates as a fast public transit system through its multiple stations, which link different city locations.

Railways: The suburb contains multiple rail services, which provide convenient access to the entire area. The St. Thomas Mount Railway Station and the Adambakkam Railway Station stand as the main rail junctions that connect Adambakkam to the rest of Chennai and beyond.

Food That Tells a Story

When in Adambakkam, don't skip the food! The breakfast places are mostly South Indian, with dosas and idlis and hot but mild sambhar like grandma used to make! The morning bustle at these places is part of the local culture too, as people gather for some strong coffee and talk to one another loudly. There are multiple types of dining establishments which operate at present. North Indian dhabas and small bakeries, which sell fresh bread and pastries, operate alongside numerous street food carts which offer sundal, pani puri and fresh fruit throughout the evening.

Conclusion

Adambakkam evolved from a small rural community to a thriving suburb of South Chennai over the last few decades. While the area's infrastructure and housing evolution have completely transformed it over this period of time, Adambakkam still retains its original identity because of the temples and close communities that reside there. Adambakkam also has a superior transportation system, great social infrastructure, and a very comfortable way of living, making it a highly desirable choice for families and working professionals seeking an urban lifestyle.
